A former Mountie, this Weyburn, Saskatchewan native was a key figure on the Ottawa, national and international basketball courts. A referee for four Olympic and Pan-Am Games, 3 University Games (FISU), 7 Canadian and Asian Games, 4 CIAU championships, and Indian, Japan, European Championships, in addition to two A.W. Jones Taiwan tournaments.

This former member of both FIBA and the Olympic technical committees was also the Executive Director of Basketball Canada (1982-1989), a Sport Canada consultant for a decade, the Sports Federation of Canada President from 1990 to 1992. He was a member of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials, and the founding member and president of the Sports Officials of Canada.

He was the Air Canada Sports Official of the Year in 1981 and the first Canadian recipient of the FIBA Order of Merit (1997), Al Rae is also a member of the Canadian and Manitoba Basketball Halls of Fame.
