Joan Hendry excelled in Track and Field for Canada. Hendry was a stalwart on Canadian Pan-American (67), Pan Pacific (69), Commonwealth (70) and Olympic (Mexico, 68 and Munich, 72) teams, winning numerous gold, silver and bronze medals in 100m. and 200m., 4x100m. relay and long jump.

She held Canadian records in the 4x100m. relay, long jump and indoor 50m. Hendry made history in 1967, becoming the first Canadian woman to break the 20 foot barrier in the long jump, clearing 20 3/4 (6.12m.) at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg. She surpassed this record at the Commonwealth Games in 1970, with a jump of 20 (6.28m.). In 1972, Hendry became Canada’s premier sprinter over 100m. with a best time and world listing of 11.4 seconds.
