John Ambrose O’Brien (deceased) played hockey with Renfrew junior, intermediate, and senior teams and with the  University of Toronto. When he was rejected entry to the Eastern Canada Association, he was instrumental in founding the National Hockey Association in 1909, made up of Renfrew, Cobalt, Haileybury, Montreal Wanderers, and Montreal Canadiens.
