Desmond ‘Des’ Patrick Smith (deceased) was a defenceman with both the Ottawa Montagnards and the Wembley Lions. He then turned pro with Montreal Maroons 1937. When the club folded, joined the Montreal Canadiens. He was traded to Chicago and then Boston in 1939.

He was a member of the 1941 Boston Stanley Cup team. Refereed five years in American League. For 22 years was the voice of Rideau Carleton Raceway.
