Dr. James Naismith (deceased) was an educator, theologian, physician and one time gymnastic standout and football player whose Canadian creativity brought to the world of sport the game of basketball. Using a soccer ball and a pair of peach baskets, he invented the game of basketball in Springfield, Mass., 1891.

The Basketball Hall of Fame bears his name.  He was inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in 1955.
